Nerve Compression Syndrome
(Carpal Tunnel)

Treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome involves identifying the reason the nerve is being compressed, commencing hand therapy, in some cases behaviour modification and finally deciding when surgery is needed.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is the most common nerve compression disorder affecting this upper limb (arm). It is due to compression of a nerve (the median nerve) that supplies sensation to the hand and also the muscles of the thumb (and some of the smaller muscles of the fingers). The reason it is called carpal tunnel syndrome is because the nerve travels through a tunnel made by some of the bones of the wrist and a ligament that joins these bones together.

Treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome involves identifying the reason the nerve is being compressed, commencing hand therapy, in some cases behaviour modification and finally deciding when surgery is needed. If surgery is required your surgeon will discuss what options are available. For some patients keyhole surgery is possible.
