Originally from Brazil, Dr Niwa received her medical degree in 2002 at the University of Sao Paulo. In 2006 she ranked first place in selection for Dermatology training at Hospital das Clinicas of the University of Sao Paulo, the largest hospital complex in Latin America.

After Dermatology training in Brazil, Dr Niwa gained further experience in lasers, cosmetic dermatology and photodynamic therapy by working at one of the largest laser and cosmetic practices in Brazil. There Dr Niwa worked with two of the country’s most prominent dermatologists who pioneered the use of laser surgery and photodynamic therapy. In their clinic, she became an expert in laser devices as well as intense pulsed light, radiofrequency devices and infrared devices. Dr Niwa also worked at the Photodynamic Therapy Clinic Division, in the Hospital das Clínicas – University of Sao Paulo – where she routinely treated skin field cancerisation, superficial basal cell carcinoma, Bowen’s disease and many other off-label indications for photodynamic therapy such as acne, Paget’s disease and viral warts. During those 6 years, her work has been referenced in the medical literature and she enjoyed guest speaking at various international medical conferences.

In 2011, Dr Niwa undertook a fellowship in San Diego, California under Dr Mitchel Goldman and Dr Fitzpatrick’s supervision. During this time, Dr Niwa gained further expertise in laser-treated skin disorders, laser resurfacing, tattoo removal and acne scar revision. In addition, she developed clinical trials and wrote manuscripts on the use of lasers for the treatment of scars and melasma that were subsequently published in international journals and wrote chapters on photodynamic therapy and vascular lasers for lasers textbooks.

While in the United States, she also did observerships at Rady Children's Hospital and at Scripps Health where she was able to broaden her experience in paediatric dermatology, general dermatology and was involved in further research. Dr Niwa also succeeded in passing the USMLE examinations.

Finally, in 2020, Dr Niwa relocated permanently to Australia and undertook upskilling in Dermatology at major hospitals in Victoria, including St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, Peter MacCallum Cancer Center and the Skin Health Institute. Dr Niwa received two prizes, the Kossard Dermatopathology award and the Ken Paver Medal for Medical Dermatology as a result of her performance at the national Fellowship Examinations.

In addition to research, Dr Niwa has special interest in skin cancer, psoriasis, eczema, paediatric dermatology, immunobullous diseases, and infectious diseases.
