Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)
There are a number of reasons why people visit a plastic surgeon to discuss their ears – the two most common reasons being: for children – they stick out, for adults – they have a skin cancer that needs removing and require ear reconstruction.
“Bat ears” are relatively common, and in most cases there is no functional issue. In saying that, there can be issues with self-esteem and body awareness that make the appearance of prominent ears a significant issue for some young people.
There are a number of different types of skin cancer that occur around the ear. Appropriate management of the lesion is the most important aspect of the patient’s care, but once this has been achieved, a properly planned and executed ear reconstruction restores normal facial harmony.
