Skin Checks. Lets assess the damage!

Posted by on 27 February 2018

With Summer officially over this week, it is a good time to assess the damage! Few people realise that skin cancer surgery and reconstruction are a major component of Plastic Surgery. This is particularly so in regions like ours where there is a love of outdoor sports, activities and occupations. Australia has the highest incidence of Skin Cancer in the world with 750,000 people treated for skin cancer each year. Sadly over 2000 of these people die each year. Melanoma is the most deadly form of skin cancer with 95% of these attributable to Sunburn. In Australia the Skin Cancer Councll states that 1 in 8 adults and 1 in 5 teenagers will experience sunburn on an average Summer weekend. To minimise harm caused by this sun exposure, early detection is essential. It is known that most skin cancers are first detected by patients themselves. This is why it is important to perform your own self assessment. Evidence does show that having a skin check performed by your GP will increase the likelihood of a skin cancer being detected when it is thinner. The thinner the skin cancer is when it is detected and treated the greater the survivorship.
